An early Saturday morning fire destroyed a single family home in the Captain Cook area, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.
An early Saturday morning fire destroyed a single family home in the Captain Cook area, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.
Responding to a 12:39 a.m. alarm, firefighters arrived to find a vacant, single-story dwelling at 87-2772 Hawaii Belt Road collapsed and still burning. They also noted an overhead service line was down in the structure and actively arcing, and exposed brush around the structure was burning, according to the department.
Big Island police were also called to the scene to direct traffic since the road was closed in both directions. The fire was declared out at 3:30 a.m. and roads were reopened.
The cause of the fire is unknown and damage was estimated at $80,000, according to the fire department.
